Article: On Mindset

On Mindset

We often come up with excuses for training, going to the gym, or otherwise. Usually that is remedied with a simple get up and do it, but where can someone start? For me, it was taking notice in the fact that I was sick of the way I had always done things. Sitting down, alone with myself, and coming to the agreement that I was being a piece of shit, and that if I was ever going to get anything done, I was going to have to change. Not think, just do. If I realized I was inside all day, I'd just grab my keys and go outside. Sleeping in? Going to bed earlier, even if I wasn't tired. It was not easy, as it was a fight against myself and everything I had become comfortable with. Everything I had been used to as I developed my bad habits. Over time I was able to start developing this mindset of "if its broken, just fix it".

This will take some practice, but will start being something you will enjoy. To get up, do the right thing the first time, and then move on. There are many things we struggle with, but a good way to start is right before you do something, ask yourself, "What is the right answer?". 90% of the time, I believe we know what the right answer is. Asking yourself, "should I really have that?", "do I need that next beer?", "Do I need to sleep 10 more minutes after sleeping 8 hours?". Then after identifying those, start changing them to hard line directives. "I don't need that", "I'll grab some water instead", and "Just get up". The key here is consistency, as you will need to repeat this over and over, until it becomes second nature. It will not be easy and if it was, everyone would be doing it. There are many things that can be identified and taking accountability is the only way to correct it. A good book I would suggest is the Hagakure by Yamamoto Tsunetomo. The Samurai were a great example of discipline and I recommend anyone who wants to better themselves to look into books like these.

The distractions and amenities we have today are easy to pick up and just get into, often times without a second thought. Everything can be bad if overused and continue to have those talks with yourself about them. There are forces and people out there that want you to fail. Don't let them win.

Bad Habits that I've developed plans for:

- Social Media

- Excessive Gaming

- General Spending

- Eating Junk

- Usage of time

- Not training
